Percentage change measures how much a value has increased or decreased relative to its starting point, expressed as a percentage. It's the calculation behind price increases, sales growth, cost inflation, and year-over-year comparisons — anywhere you need to know not just how much something changed, but how big that change is relative to where it started.
This is different from margin or markup. Margin and markup describe the relationship between cost and price on a single transaction. Percentage change describes movement over time between two values — last year's revenue vs this year's, last month's price vs this month's, or any before-and-after comparison.

Note the direction matters: a 20% increase followed by a 20% decrease does NOT return you to the original value — because each percentage is calculated against a different base.
Year-over-year (YoY) and month-over-month (MoM) percentage change figures are standard in almost every financial report, from small business dashboards to public company earnings calls. The key discipline is consistency: always compare the same time period length (a 31-day month against another 31-day month, not against February), and always state clearly which direction the comparison runs — "up 12% from last year" and "last year was 12% lower" describe the same fact but can read very differently in a summary.
